Western University Alumni Stadium

RKA was retained by the University of Western Ontario to deliver design, tender, and contract administration services for a four-phase renovation of Alumni Stadium — transforming it into a modern, competitive athletic facility.

Phase one addressed a failing field drainage system through on-site investigation and a full synthetic turf and drainage replacement, with permitting coordinated through the Thames Valley Conservation Authority given the site's floodplain location.

Phase two brought the running track up to World Athletics Certified standards. RKA guided UWO through an informed selection process, ultimately delivering a structural spray system that balances performance with value.

Phase three introduced a state-of-the-art RGB LED sport lighting system, allowing the stadium to be washed in purple or any colour for events and pre-game atmosphere. A standout challenge — and success — was the relocation of a provincially protected Osprey nest from an existing light pole. RKA designed a custom nesting platform atop a new light standard, coordinated with the Conservation Authority, and removed the old pole after nesting season.

Phase four elevated the spectator experience with renovated bleachers featuring VIP access areas, fold-down seating, and an integrated 'beer garden' viewing platform.
